Overview

The goal of this project was to design a mobile app that streamlines the registration of players, communication between the academy and players, and stats tracking for players.

Client:

Southwest Soccer Academy (SSA) is a year-round academy based in Waterloo region.  Their goal is to be a leader in grassroots soccer by focusing on the training and development of young athletes while delivering a high level of organization and instruction for players ages 5 to 12.

Research & Problem Discovery

As an organization that runs programs 42 weeks a year starting in October through to the end of July, Southwest Soccer Academy was constantly scrambling to setup registration forms and ensure that payments were made on time. The problems didn’t stop there; once players were registered, Southwest Soccer Academy had experimented with various apps to communicate with them. However, they constantly ran into issues.

The mobile app that I designed for them provided an efficient, convenient, and streamlined method for players to register, communicate, and track their progress at the academy.

SSA needed an app that would allow parents to:

  1. register their kids

  2. communicate with the academy and coaches

  3. upload photos/videos of their kids

Until that point, they had been using the Heja app. However, parents had been complaining of a number of problems they kept facing while using the app.

To further my understanding of the problem, I decided to conduct primary and secondary research.

Primary research:

I sat with the SSA owners to discuss what features they wanted to see in their app. I also was able to conduct 13 interviews with parents to understand their pains and frustrations.

Secondary research:

I searched the internet to see if the pains and frustrations of parents were exclusive to SSA or common to others as well. I discovered that many people had the same complaints as SSA parents.
